Waos community of artists want to explore a new way to connect local artists to their closest public and create exhibition together and set in a way that is inviting to all sort of public and ages. Art institutions attract a certain public, and these institutions are rarely available for local artists. Normally these institutions show works of established actors, not reachable for the majority of local artists. The other solution for these artists is to get inside a gallery place by paying for a wall to show, or by selling their art through commissions. This solution excludes people that don’t have time to develop or market their art full time, making it difficult for them to meet the public. Moreover, their value is also subject to trends limiting some interesting works to come forward. That is the reason why our community focuses on work that are not depending on trends but rather the creative process and what comes out of it. Exploring actual societal issues (like sustainability, gender etc.) is a natural part of our core values.
From the public perspective, we have seen that not everybody feels entitled to go to a museum and or gallery to experience art. We want to create exhibitions where everybody feels welcome, meaning developing new ways to show art and receive the public within a showing space. The experimental part of the project is to reduce the gap between the artists and their public, providing a safe experience for everyone. Therefore, we don’t only show art, we inspire and educate the local public to be more invested in the art process through workshops, discussions and performances around the ongoing exhibition.
We want to open the possibility to engage with young and emerging cultural actors and give them an arena to explore their creative expression. We want culture and creativity to reach all kind of people, including children and young adults as well as elderly. Therefore, all of our events are thought through from this perspective.
Waos is · prioritizing women and non-binary artists when it comes to exhibitions, as of today this group is still underrepresented in the art world, · during our cultural events, reach out to local bands, dancers, musicians and performers to collaborate in order to strengthen the local community bond, and · gathering local artists, musicians, institutions etc. will create a natural and dynamic pattern of marketing
The only criteria to get in is dedication to your art practice (to the level you can), trying as much as possible to support sustainable creation and spaces, embracing slow pace and embodying in your art one manifesto that deeply resonate with your values.
